Helen Mary Walker was born April 18, 1930 and graduated from Enid High in 1948. She represented Enid at Girls State and the first ever Girls Nation in Washington DC. She married her high school sweetheart Owen Garriott and received degrees from University of Oklahoma and University of Houston at Clear Lake.
Later, she wanted to give something back to the community that was so supportive of her during her formative years, and decided that a children’s museum should be opened. She chose the building at 200 East Maple, which the Garriott Family purchased and donated back to the community in 1992. Three years later the museum opened completely debt free. That same year, ground was broken on what would become Adventure Quest. It took 12,000 volunteers and 150,000 volunteer hours before Adventure Quest opened in September of 1996.
Today, it remains the world’s largest community built outdoor playground, and a visible reminder of what Enid can accomplish when everyone works together.
