Watermelon was born on May 27, 1921 in Eagle City, Oklahoma. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Memphis, TN where he attended public school and began his life.
Watermelon served in the 115th Field Artillery, Tennessee National Guard; Honorably Discharged. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII “Armed Guard” manning guns on supply ships; During WWII, he sailed the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, Mediterranean and the Gulf of Mexico: Honorably Discharged.
He started his 42 ½ years career as Brakeman then Conductor for the Frisco Railroad.
