Following the Cherokee Outlet Land Run, development of land west of downtown Enid was delayed due to the Weatherley-Todd Contest over the ownership of 160 acres of land. After the land dispute was settled, Charles West, a young attorney in Enid, purchased the Braden farm on April 16, 1902 for $14,500.00.
Charles West was also President of Waverley Investment Company. West immediately transferred the land he purchased from Braden to his company (the Waverley Investment Company); and on May 15, 1902, West filed the first plat for the Waverley’s First Addition. West platted Waverley’s second addition on April 25, 1905. Waverley Investment Company platted the third addition on January 12, 1906 and Waverley’s fourth and final plat was filed on May 4, 1907, the year Oklahoma became a state.
Charles West later became Oklahoma’s First Attorney General and served in that capacity from 1907 to 1915.
Charles West played such a lead role in the development of the City of Enid and in the State of Oklahoma; therefore, the Waverley Historic District Neighborhood Association recommends the City of Enid to recognize the contributions of Charles J. West.
