Bill Vickers was born Aug. 24, 1937, in Thomas to Wayne E. and Dovie V. Self Vickers.
He moved to Enid in 1942, graduating from Enid High School in 1955. He attended Phillips University from 1956 to 1957.
Bill married Louise Deffenbaugh in August 1956, in Enid. They later divorced. He went to work at Phillips Printing Aug. 15, 1953 where he became general manager and vice-president until he retired March 17, 1999. He has been a member of Enid Noon AMBUCS since January 1959, the Jaycees and Toastmasters and EJRT since 1975 where he was past-president and current treasurer.
Bill married Janice Lynch Sept. 14, 1973, in Enid. He was Mr. AMBUC of 1993-1994. He has claimed the Youth Athletic Committee for 34 years. Vickers was a life member of Noon AMBUCS. One year after he joined AMBUCS in 1959, he founded the “AMBUCS Athletic Program for Youth.” He was a longtime board member of the City of Enid Park Department. The Bill F. Vicker’s Complex at Crossland Park was named in his honor. One of his main park projects was helping in the development of the playing areas in Government Springs Park.
Vickers also worked to secure lighting for the ABC Park at Van Buren and Walnut, and was involved in the development of Crosslin Park. Other contributions to the community included service on the board of directors of the Booker T. Washington Community Center, Garfield County Red Cross chapter, Eldercare program, Boy Scouts, Opportunity school, sheltered workshops, human rights council, group homes, and Enid State School.
